[G. ornis ( ornith- ), bird, + nyssus, to prick] Introduction The Ornithonyssus mite is closely related to the Dermanyssus mite. They are surface mites that occur in caged birds and poultry. Ornithonyssus sylviarum, otherwise known as the northern fowl mite, is a common ectoparasite of chicken flocks worldwide.

They are very small mites, ranging in size from 0.6-1 mm (0.02-0.04 in).

NFM permanently live their entire lives on their host, spending most of their time on the feathers, traveling to the skin surface to feed on blood. During heavy infestations, NFM can cause the chickens a great deal of Ornithonyssus bacoti bacoti is a hematophagous parasite commonly referred to as the tropical rat mite.[1] They feed only on blood and serum from many hosts.[2][3] They can be found and cause disease on rats and wild rodents most commonly, but also small mammals and humans when other hosts are scarce.[4][5] Outbreaks tend to occur in older, less maintained buildings. The mite however can travel tropical rat mite (Ornithonyssus bacoti) in rodents.

The posterior end tapers acutely in Ornithonyssus sylviarum but more evenly in Ornithonyssus bursa. There are three pairs of setae on the sternal plate in Ornithonyssus bursa and only two pairs in Ornithonyssus sylviarum. Figure 2.
